Wagner chief,Yevgeny Prigozhin, the most powerful mercenary in Russia, was on board the jet that crashed on Wednesday night north of Moscow, according to Russian police. This occurred two months to the day after Prigozhin spearheaded an unsuccessful uprising against the army’s top brass.
No official statement was provided by the Kremlin or the Defence Ministry regarding the status of Prigozhin, who has openly expressed opposition towards the leadership of the army due to his belief in their inadequate handling of Russia’s involvement in the Ukrainian conflict.
Wagner’s associate, a Telegram channel, declared the individual known as Grey Zone deceased. The channel proceeded to commend Grey Zone as an esteemed figure, attributing heroic and patriotic qualities to him. It further asserted that Grey Zone’s demise was a result of unidentified individuals whom it referred to as “traitors to Russia.”
At dawn light on Thursday morning nearby a forested area where forensic investigators had pitched a tent, pieces of the jet, including its tail, were scattered over the ground. Early on Thursday, mourners left flowers and candles lighted at Wagner’s offices in St. Petersburg.
Some of his followers have blamed the Russian government, while others have taken the accusation at Ukraine, which was set to celebrate its Independence Day on Thursday, amid hysterical speculation and lack of verified information.
Regardless of who or what caused the accident, Putin would be relieved of the person who had launched the most significant challenge to the Russian leader’s authority since he took office in 1999 with his passing.
