HP Envy x360 with IMAX display: an appropriate replacement for the MacBook Air

Apple’s MacBook Air is typically an easy pick among customers and critics alike when we look at productivity and creator-focused laptops in the premium bracket (Rs 1 lakh and above). That’s mainly due to three factors: a dependable and steady processor, long battery life, and a stylish appearance. Three years ago, Apple introduced the M1-powered MacBook Air 13, but since then, the rivalry has been more intense than ever. Don’t get me wrong, a number of Windows-powered laptops have been introduced since then that rival Apple’s products, but they consistently lack one of the three characteristics described above.

There are many notebooks with Intel Evo certification that cost less than Rs. 1 lakh and offer dependable performance and a stylish appearance, but the battery life is disappointing. A stylish aesthetic may be sacrificed in exchange for the laptop’s excellent performance and long battery life.

The HP Envy x360 is a convertible laptop that also functions as a tablet. Given that many tablets don’t include one in the box, the HP stylus that is included in the package is also a plus. The HP Envy x360‘s battery life is better than most competitors in its price range . The speakers produces a clear output and decent bass, which pleasantly pleases .

The HP Envy x360, however, is visible. A 15-inch IMAX Enhanced certified display, which was previously only found on a few (and extremely costly) TVs and projectors, is now available on laptops for the first time. It is also reasonably stylish for a 15-inch laptop without sacrificing the actual ports that MacBooks frequently lack. If you make the case that Apple has a “immersive” ecosystem, Windows and its close ties to the Apple ecosystem are quickly changing that.

Does this imply that the upgraded HP Envy x360 is superior to Apple’s lauded MacBook Air? Here are the essential details.

HP Envy x360 design

With a sandblasted anodized finish, the new HP Envy x360 is available in the dark hue “nightfall black.” The outcome is a texture that is more smoother and has the ideal balance of gloss and matte.

In the world of modern laptops, the 1.77 kg weight of the HP Envy x360 may not be regarded as lightweight, but it is also not the heaviest.

The HP Envy x360‘s port lineup is respectable, with two Thunderbolt 4 USB-C slots, an HDMI port, and a USB-A port. Since the laptop is also geared toward creators, it has an SD card slot.. For consumers who value their privacy, the display has a physical shutter for the webcam. The audio/mic combination is also present, of course.

Additionally admirable is HP’s dedication to the environment. Plastic is used sparingly in the packaging, while recyclable materials are often used in the laptop. Additionally made from post-consumer recycled plastic are the keyboard keycaps.  . The keys have decent travel as well, which makes typing much more enjoyable.

HP Envy x360 display

Since the HP Envy x360 is the first laptop to have an IMAX Enhanced certification, there is a lot to say about its display.

The certification’s main goal is to create an immersive viewing environment with vivid colors, fine details, and deeper blacks, similar to going to an IMAX theater to see a movie. According to HP, a combination of hardware and software modifications led to the certification. The laptop already has an OLED screen, which improves viewing quality in comparison to those with LCD screens. Comparing  the results to those of the MacBook Air 13 and Samsung Galaxy Book 3 Pro 360,  the HP Envy x360 is the clear winner in terms of multimedia consumption.

There is an LCD version of the HP Envy x360 (15-fe0028TU) available, however it lacks the IMAX Enhanced certification. It has a 15.6-inch Full-HD OLED display. The scaled-back model costs far less, at Rs 78,999. It all depends on your priorities and preferences.

The OLED version features 100% sRGB color space and 400 nits of brightness. If you’re a reader, having touch support on the display may be excellent in some circumstances.

The OLED display on the Envy x360 is superior in terms of colors and contrast to the pricey AMOLED display on the Galaxy Book 3 Pro 360. Although Samsung is clearly the winner in that sense, the brightness is still adequate for indoor conditions. Although it has significantly superior speakers, the M1-powered MacBook Air 13 falls short in terms of colors and brightness.

On Disney Plus Hotstar, IMAX blockbusters like Avengers Endgame and Guardians of the Galaxy 3 seems more colorful. The same is noticeable when Full-HD videos with high bit rates  are being played on YouTube. Even non-IMAX shows on Netflix like Ozark and Mindhunter has sharper contrast. The blue tones are automatically enhanced to appear sharper and clearer on the HP Envy x360 because many of the photos in these Netflix episodes are taken in low-light conditions.

The HP Envy x360 may not always produce results that are color-accurate due to its enhancement of true colors, which could be a problem while editing. More natural colors can be obtained by adjusting the display settings. Apple MacBooks may occasionally make a better companion if used just for editing. Similarly, the Samsung Galaxy Book 3 Pro 360’s touch response is comparatively more fluid.

The HP Envy x360 is not the best laptop for gaming because HP is presenting it as a laptop that is focused on productivity and costs Rs 1 lakh. However, it was simple to manage many tabs on Google Chrome while running multiple apps in the background for routine tasks. The Core i5 might be an excellent option for aspiring creators, but for routine editing tasks, the Core i7 would be preferable.

AI integration has made using Windows laptops more fun. In order to improve hybrid work, HP claims to have upgraded the webcam. Although there have been observable improvements in camera quality, Simply put, AI-enhanced video chatting doesn’t significantly improve upon the features offered by certain high-end computers.

The HP Envy x360 scored 4,132 on PC Mark 10’s general test in terms of benchmarks. It achieved 1,313, which is rather disappointing for this pricing in 3D Mark’s GPU test for Battlefield Field V.
