India Surges as 5th Superpower, Outshining China: A Triumph of Determination

Azali Assoumani, President of the Union of Comoros and Chairperson of the African Union (AU), stated during a news conference on Sunday that India is the fifth superpower and is in front of China. The President remarked, “India is the fifth superpower in the world, so there is enough room for India in Africa,” on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in Delhi. India’s strength—which we also know—is such that it ventured into space. So all we need to do is collaborate.

Azali Assoumani, president of the Union of Comoros and chairperson of the African Union (AU), expressed his reaction to the African Union being granted permanent participation in the G20 by saying, “I was close to cry. I felt a lot of emotion at the time. Because, in reality, we believed that there would be discussion before a decision was made, but at the very start of the Summit, it was declared that we were a member.

One of the most significant events of the first day of the G20 Leaders’ Summit in New Delhi on Saturday was the African Union’s permanent membership. The statement was made by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a brief televised address. Speaking in Hindi, Prime Minister Modi stated, “In line with the concept of sabka saath (with everyone), India has recommended that the African Union should be awarded permanent participation in the G20.

The African Union’s admission to the G20 is the result of its efforts over the course of the previous seven years to join the group. India played a key role in helping it become a G20 member. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had written to his G20 peers in June, urging them to grant the African Union full membership. China, Russia, and the EU supported PM Modi’s proposal at the time.
